Scope of the Specialty

Oral & Maxillofacial (OMF) Surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck. Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery comprises theoretical and practical  aspects.

Theoretical training

  1. Methods of diagnosis of  diseases and conditions affecting the teeth, mouth, jaws, face and surrounding tissues.

  2. Recognizing clinical manifestations of systemic diseases in the above area.

  3. Clinical investigation and biopsy methods

  4. Treatment of emergency situations in maxillofacial cases

  5. General principles of Surgery

  6. Facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery

  7. Wound healing - skin grafting - allografting.

  8. Reconstruction of maxillofacial defects with muscular, musculocutaneous and compound flaps and microsurgical techniques.

  9. Face and neck tumors in children and adults.

  10. Craniofacial congenital deformities.

  11. Salivary gland physiology and diseases.

Practical Training

  1. Oral surgery

  2. Treatment of infections in the face end neck

  3. Trauma of the mouth, jaws, face and surrounding tissues.

  4. Preprosthetic surgery using free and pedicled flaps, use of autografts and allografts on the mandible and the maxilla, dental and facial implants.

  5. Reconstructiove surgery of the hard and soft tissues of the face - microsurgery.

  6. Orthognathic Surgery, craniofacial deformities, aesthetic facial surgery.

  7. Facial Pain.

  8. Distraction osteogenesis of the jaws.

  9. Diseases and treatment of maxillary sinus diseases.

  10. Surgery of cysts and benign and malignant tumors of the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

  11. Diseases and treatment of the tempromandibular junction disorders.

  12. Treatment of congenital craniofacial disorders (clefts etc)

  13. Surgery of benign and malignant conditions of the salivary glands.

  14. Treatment of any condition of the hard and soft tissue that requires surgical intervention on the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

  15. Laser applications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

  16. Endoscopic techniques in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

  17. Reconstructive microsurgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 

  18. Training in maxillofacial ultrasonography.
